Elizabeth Warren Could Become Crypto’s Biggest Threat in 2027

Crypto Critic Elizabeth Warren is expected to become the chairwoman of the Senate Banking Committee in January 2027. That could give her new powers to investigate crypto companies, demand documents, and question industry leaders.

But who could face her first, and what could this mean for the CLARITY Act?

What Power Warren Holds as Banking Committee Chairwoman

When the new Congress begins on January 3, 2027, Elizabeth Warren is in line to become chairwoman of the Senate Banking Committee. This is because Senate committee leadership usually follows seniority rules.

Former Democratic leader Senator Sherrod Brown has announced his retirement at the end of his term in 2025, leaving the top Democratic position on the committee open.

Her appointment is not formally final, but few observers expect a serious challenge.

The role would give Warren much more power over financial markets and the crypto industry. As a senator, she has largely relied on letters and requests for information from crypto companies. As chairwoman, she would gain subpoena power, allowing the committee to formally demand documents and testimony.

This could lead to stricter checks on major crypto companies and their leaders.

Three Targets Warren Could Hit First

One of Warren’s first priorities could be putting crypto companies under closer scrutiny. She has already questioned regulators about giving crypto firms bank-like approvals.

Coinbase, Ripple, and Trump-linked World Liberty Financial are among the companies she has raised concerns about. As chair, she could ask for more details and hold public hearings.

Warren is also looking beyond crypto companies. In October, she and Republican Senator John Curtis questioned Kalshi and Polymarket over possible insider trading and market manipulation in election-related markets.

Her third major target could be Trump-linked crypto businesses. Warren has repeatedly questioned the relationship between President Donald Trump, his family, and digital asset ventures. She previously asked the SEC to investigate whether World Liberty Financial misled investors.

CLARITY Act Faces a January Deadline

The first major battle could be the CLARITY Act. The bill failed to advance in the Senate after a 49-50 vote in September, falling short of the 60 votes needed to move forward.

The bill already failed to clear a key Senate vote in September. If lawmakers cannot pass it before January 3, a Democratic-controlled Senate could make another attempt much harder.

As committee chair, Warren could influence which financial bills move forward, potentially slowing industry-friendly crypto legislation and keeping companies under greater regulatory pressure.

Bitcoin Faces a New Political Pressure

The political shift comes while Bitcoin is already under pressure. Bitcoin is already trading below $76,000, nearly 40% below its roughly $126,000 all-time high, as the market faces pressure from the recent US technology sell-off and broader economic concerns

A Warren-led Banking Committee could add another source of uncertainty, especially if tougher investigations and stricter crypto oversight become a priority in 2027.
